Q & A with Andrew Alston

In seven years of working with International Baccalaureate students, Andrew Alston is one of the most well rounded young men that I have ever had the opportunity to mentor. The combination of his disciplined upbringing, his personal convictions, and his AFJROTC training set Andrew apart from his peers and will afford him much success at Virginia Tech and beyond.”

AndrewAlstonCapAndGownTBox: Good afternoon Andrew. Tell us a little about yourself.

AA: I’m the fifth of ten siblings and a senior in the International Baccalaureate (I.B.) program at Hampton High School.  I have spent the last four years balancing the rigorous I.B. program curriculum with work responsibilities and varsity athletic participation on the Football team.

TBox: Your also very modest.  We understand that your 1860 SAT score ranked fourth among all Hampton High School students.  Congratulations!  What are your long term career aspirations?

AA: My goal is to pursue a career as a medical professional within the United States Air Force and recently TeachersBox LLC helped me take a giant step towards achieving that goal.

TBox: If you don’t mind, explain that to our readers.

AA: I have received academic mentoring from the TeachersBox founder for the past four years.  In fact, five years ago Mr. Davis strongly recommended that my older brother Uriah (currently a sophomore at Virginia Commonwealth University) and I enroll in the I.B. program.  And in preparation for my Air Force ROTC Scholarship application, TeachersBox prepared my resume, wrote my letter of recommendation, and conducted a mock interview which equipped me to differentiate myself from the other candidates.

TBox: Have you ever attended a TeachersBox workshop or Conference?

AA: Actually, I did.  I attended the High Schooler’s Guide to College (HSGtC) Workshop at the end of the first semester.   I picked up a number of tools to succeed in college.

TBox: How have you benefited the most from TeachersBox?

AA: Two things come to mind.  I think their Youth Scholars Program was beneficial because I received really good information at no cost.  My dad then contacted TeachersBox to prepare my resume, which led to the interview prep.   With an assist from TeachersBox, I won an Air Force ROTC full tuition scholarship, so I’d say I benefited a great deal from TeachersBox’s services.

TBox: Thank you for your time Andrew.  We wish you all the best in your academic pursuits at Virginia Tech.TeachersBoxAppleInBlack
